DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When it came to choosing to take on The Producers as my directorial debut, I decided it was a ‘go big or go home’ moment and took the plunge. I have always been such a fan and student of quick-witted and subversive comedy.

It ain’t no mystery, if it’s politics or history, the thing you gotta know is EVERYTHING is showbiz.”- Roger Debris, The Producers

It’s always important to me to find the one line in every show that succinctly presents the unvarnished core message of the show—and this line could not be more perfectly crafted. We see it executed time and time again throughout the show—success revolves around how you package it, how it’s presented. Is it delivered quietly through the unexpected friendship budding between two shysters, or does it explode onto the world stage, a glittering expo of showbiz, intended to mask blatant fraud?

The Producers was groundbreaking in 1967 when it first hit the big screen, and in many ways has continued to be extremely relevant in one way or another. It challenged social norms and proved that ridicule and a well crafted joke is the fastest way to cut a would-be dictator down to size, robbing them of their power and myths, and fight back against social injustice.

Mel Brooks himself said, ‘If you can make people laugh at Hitler, or tyrants in general, then you’ve won the day.’

-Caitlin Martelle, Director
