DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, TN, where rock and roll and modern music as we know it was born. What you’ll experience tonight is just a taste of the magic that happened in this former bakery-turned-recording studio. And yes, for some reason, the writers of the show changed it to an “auto parts store,” but in reality, it was a bakery! Probably because the actual space was so tiny (seriously, Google it or take a trip to Memphis and see for yourself) that they had to justify making it big enough to stage a Broadway show in! I encourage you to learn more about Sam Phillips and Sun Records when you get the chance.

I’ve been aware of Million Dollar Quartet ever since it premiered in Chicago in 2008 (I’m an Illinois boy at heart) and even had the chance to work alongside one of the writers, Floyd Mutrux, as an audition reader for a sort-of sequel piece he wrote a few years back—a project my wife cast. But I never saw MDQ live until my father played Sam Phillips in a production in Illinois a couple of years ago. I flew in to surprise him for closing night. He crushed it. The whole cast did. And as I watched, I kept thinking one thing: I need to bring this show to The Firehouse.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t brag on this incredible cast and company. Million Dollar Quartet is rarely produced without bringing in talent from New York—typically actors who have played these roles before. But every performer you see tonight is a North Texas local, stepping into these iconic shoes (blue suede or otherwise) for the first time. And you’re getting to see them right here at The Firehouse Theatre in Farmers Branch, TX. Just like that fateful night in December of 1956, this is a special unique night we get to share with you.

Alright, that’s enough from me. Sit back, relax, and get ready—because we’ve got a whole lotta shakin’ to do.

-Owen Beans

Director and The Firehouse Theatre Artistic Producer
