DIRECTOR’S NOTE

If I’m being honest, I’ve struggled with how to introduce this show to you all. Partially because it needs no introduction. Partially because I know what this show means to me in 2024 may not be what it means to you.

I was raised by a single mom in the suburbs of San Francisco. Half of my childhood was spent in the home of my musical loving grandmother and my staunch conservative grandfather. I received a VHS of the Disney adaptation of Annie on Christmas morning in 1999. In 2002, I auditioned for my first musical- Annie Jr. I was in two scenes and I have been a theatre kid and Annie apologist ever since.

In 2024, I look at Annie differently. What felt very nearly like an American fairytale now seems strikingly relevant again. Homelessness is rapidly rising. The foster care system is overcrowded and underfunded. There is a cavernous divide between political parties. The wealthiest man in the world has endorsed (and successfully campaigned alongside) the most controversial presidential candidate in my lifetime. I sure could use a rousing anthem of optimism right about now.

And then I am reminded that Annie’s message of hope remains the same. From the Depression-laden streets of New York to the White House- Annie enters communities and changes them by believing louder than anyone else that hope is not lost. Thankfully in Annie’s case, the result is a lot of powerful people finally decide to do something about it. Those most hurting simply decide to make it to tomorrow. Both require immense courage, something Annie has in spades.

I sincerely hope our show has channeled both a spirit of humility and bravery. I hope it serves as a moment of joy for you and the loved ones you’ve chosen to share it with. I hope we may listen to our red-headed heroine’s anthem with fresh ears and consider our part in making a better “Tomorrow”. And I hope the next time we tell this story, it feels more like a fairytale.

With gratitude,

Matthew Silar
